The importance of newspaper
A newspaper is a periodical publication containing written information about current events and is mostly typed in black ink with a white or grey background. The first printed version of newspaper is regarded ‘The Relation’ which came in the year 1605 at Strasbourg. Since then the newspapers have become a part and parcel of our life.
Man is curious to know what is happening around us. In modern times, when each new dawn is likely to bring a momentous change, it is hard to live in ignorance of the events. That is why the newspaper has become an inseparable part of our life.
The newspaper like TV and radio is a powerful media to satisfy this curiosity. We can say that newspaper is a printed history of every day. The morning tea, the day’s activities are often determined by the arrival of the newspaper in the morning. A good newspaper supplies us with all sorts of important and fascinating information about what is happening daily in local, regional, national and international levels. It covers social, political, economic, sports, films and entertainment and other important news. It may, in fact, be described as the ‘people’s university’.
The newspaper acts as a kind of liaison between the government and the people. In a democratic country like ours, a good newspaper acts as a powerful pillar for awakening human consciousness. The editorial columns convey views and opinions about some serious affairs and help in formulating public opinion. The newspaper acquaints the people with government policies.
A newspaper also spreads knowledge of history, literary, scientific inventions, geographical changes which help the students immensely. Mere bookish knowledge is not sufficient for a student. A student who reads newspaper regularly can take part in the talks and discussions in an enlightened society.
Different readers read newspaper according to their taste. But a biased newspaper supplying distorted news may harm to society. Hence, a newspaper should be responsible and to be read with proper care and caution.
