Curriculum Vitae Job Application Format

■ What is Curriculum Vitae:

A curriculum vitae (CV) – the phrase literally means ‘the course of life’ – is an important document in one’s life today. For students graduating from college, it may seem the most important document in their lives.
In today’s competitive world, one has, unfortunately to ‘sell’ oneself in the job market and an important tool in the process is the CV or Curriculum Vitae.

■ Function of the Curriculum Vitae:

A well-written CV will not get you a job. A badly written CV may, however, result in the loss of an opportunity.

■ The Role of the CV:

The role of the CV is –

>>To get you to the stage where you are called for the interview.

>> To provide some basic information about yourself to your potential employers.

■ Impression of CV:

The CV is often seen by potential employers as a reflection of your personality. If you are applying for a job for which there are large number of applicants, then it is very likely that the employers will call only a small percentage of applicants for the second stage. They will of course check whether you have the minimum requirements, degrees, experience they have asked for. After going through the CVs of the applicants they will eliminate some applications. So, CV plays an important role in the selection process.

■ Impression of Bad CV:

An untidy and carelessly written CV reveals that the person is careless about his or her work. It is usually taken to signify the fact that the person is not serious about his job. If the CV is full of spelling mistakes and is visually unattractive, the employer will consider that the applicant has not taken greater care to prepare this important document and considers him or her careless.

The employers may get the impression of a bad CV –

>>That the person is lazy and does not wish to work hard at producing something good, but is satisfied with substandard results.

>>That the candidate is not really interested in this particular job and has therefore not bothered to write a good CV.

If you do not have access to any of these, then at least ensure that it is neatly written. If you are writing your CV on a computer, then you can easily choose a font that is slightly eye-catching and easy to read.

■ Important points to present in a good CV:

>> Choose the font you think best and is not difficult to read.

>> Keep a clear 1.5 inch margin on all sides.

>> Use good quality paper for your CV. Cheap or soiled paper will convey a negative impression.
